See the legendary basketry of Duwamish Tribal Member Mary Lou Slaughter back at the home
of the Duwamish Tribe, the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center. Join us in welcoming Mary Lou and her baskets on March 21st for the opportunity to speak with the artist, admire her work, and
build our community. Light refreshments will be provided.
A direct descendant of Chief Seattle himself, Mary Lou Slaughter has been recognized as a Native Master Weaver for her work in the fields of functional and decorative traditional weaving. Mary Lou studied under Master Eddie Carriere, and her current work runs the gamut from skirts, hats, blankets, vests, jewelry and more. In addition to her work in weaving, Mary Lou Slaughter has worked tirelessly for the ongoing cause of the Duwamish People in our efforts to gain federal recognition. Her enthusiasm for weaving is only surpassed by her passion for preserving tradition and fighting for the rights of the Duwamish Tribe.
